Sporting Kansas City Looks Abroad for Inspiration, not Validation

sporting kansas city sporting ikcFrom Wednesday evening forward, the Kansas City Wizards will be known as Sporting Kansas City (or Sporting KC).

The logo to the right, which has been circulating on the Internet in recent days, may not be 100 percent exact, but FanHouse is confident that it's pretty close to what will be unveiled at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET.

(UPDATE: That's the logo!)

We're not certain of too much more, except for the fact that a name that's been part of Major League Soccer for 14 of its 15 years -- a name under which the club from K.C. won an MLS Cup, a U.S. Open Cup and a Supporters Shield -- will cease to exist.

The initial instinct is to be mortified. Like Real Salt Lake, the name Sporting Kansas City seems to embody the worst kind of self-hating cultural identity theft. Perhaps it's even worse -- after all, Dave Checketts wasn't abandoning more than a dozen years of trophy-winning history when he selected an "authentic" soccer name for his expansion club.
