Pablo Sandoval's Future a Weighty Issue for Giants

Filed under:

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants' offseason is complicated enough by being a month shorter than usual -- a good problem, to be sure -- but they also have to address the sticky issue of the guy who was supposed to be the nucleus of their lineup.

Remember Pablo Sandoval?

A year ago, Sandoval had just come off a season in which he hit .330 with 25 homers and a .387 on-base percentage. He also finished seventh in the MVP voting in 2009.

Now? He's an out-of-shape bench player who provided very little value offensively or defensively. Sandoval hit .268 with 13 homers and he played poorly at third base this year. He was benched for much of the playoffs.
