The odd pairing was cemented on Saturday afternoon when the visiting Rapids outlasted the Columbus Crew in a penalty kick shootout. The Crew had won the game, 2-1, squaring the series, 2-2, on aggregate. Although the hosts dominated the 30-minute overtime, they lacked the finishing touch.

The first nine penalty kicks were perfect, before Crew workhorse midfielder Brian Carroll (photo left), an MLS Cup champion with both Columbus and D.C. United, lofted his effort over the crossbar.
