Kansas State Annihilates Texas, Longhorns in Danger of Losing Season

Kansas State TexasLess than 12 months ago, the Texas Longhorns were playing in the national championship game. Now, they may not even be good enough to qualify for the Texas Bowl.

After a thorough 39-14 beatdown at the hands of Kansas State, Texas is in grave danger of having a losing record and missing the bowls altogether.

With the loss, teamed with Texas Tech's win, the Longhorns (4-5, 2-4 in Big 12) are now in last place in the Big 12 South. Losses to No. 19 Oklahoma State and a suddenly scorching hot Texas A&M team would give Texas seven losses for the first time since 1997 -- John Mackovic's final season in Austin. In fact, Mack Brown has never been worse than nine wins at Texas, and the best the Longhorns could do this season is now eight.

As for this particular game, Texas moved the ball quite well offensively. Statistically better than K-State, even, as the Longhorns outgained the Wildcats by over 100 yards. The main problem was that Garrett Gilbert threw five interceptions. Both Tysyn Hartman and Ty Zimmerman picked off Gilbert twice.

The other big issue for Texas was that once Kansas State grabbed the lead, the Wildcats just pounded the football and kept that clock running. In all, the Wildcats carried the ball 50 times for 274 yards. Quarterback Collin Klein carried the ball 26 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Senior tailback Daniel Thomas added 18 carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Kansas State only needed to attempt five passes -- compared to 60 from Texas.

The score actually could have been much worse. It was 39-0 through three quarters when K-State coach Bill Snyder called off the dogs. Texas' final score came with just 31 seconds remaining in the game.

The Wildcats (6-3, 3-3) have three games left -- all on the road -- against Missouri, Colorado and North Texas. It's likely they end with their highest win total since 2003, when Snyder's Wildcats won 11 games.
