Much-improved DC United back line set to lose Jakovic

WASHINGTON ? Just as D.C. United?s back line is finding consistency, Gold Cup duty will claim Canadian international Dejan Jakovic for most of June.

Though he?ll leave the club after Sunday?s meeting with the Portland Timbers to join up with Canada, he said remains focused on taking care of business this weekend.

?I?m not thinking about [the Gold Cup] right now," Jakovic said. "We obviously have an important game against Portland. The standings are so close, one win puts us in a very good position.?

Defense-first Woolard brings consistency to DC back line

WASHINGTON ? After spending all of 2010 out of MLS, a rash of injuries have given D.C. United defender Daniel Woolard another chance to prove himself in the top flight.

When Marc Burch failed a late fitness test back on May 4 against the Seattle Sounders, opportunity knocked for Woolard, who prior to that had managed just a single start in league play. The left back responded with three solid performances in a row and has helped solidify what had been a shaky defense.

PORTLAND, OR ? D.C. United punctured the Portland Timbers? air of invincibility at JELD-WEN Field on Sunday, defeating the home side, 3-2.

Missing key offensive weapons Charlie Davies and Dax McCarty, both out with injuries, D.C. United became the first team in six to earn an MLS regular season victory in Portland.

It was a game that followed none of the familiar scripts at JELD-WEN Field ? and it included four penalty kicks.

SET PIECE CAUTION

Ahead of Sunday's match against the Portland Timbers (5:00 p.m. ET/Comcast SportsNet), Thursday's D.C. United training session included a large portion of time devoted to set pieces. The team worked on both defending and scoring from dead-ball plays.

"[Portland] is very good on set pieces," Assitant Coach Chad Ashton said following training. "It's no secret that [set pieces] have been one of our weaknesses, so we're going to have to do a good job and hopefully do a better job on the offensive side of [set plays] as well."

Charlie Davies Comes Full Circle in Long Road to Recovery

charlie daviesWASHINGTON, DC -- Charlie Davies was offered a tryout by D.C. United because the club was atop Major League Soccer's allocation priority list.

The expansion franchises in Portland (Kenny Cooper) and Vancouver (Jay DeMerit) had made their choices, and United was next in line thanks to its wooden spoon performance in 2010.

On the surface, it's that simple. It's in the rules.

But Davies, who credits religion for some of the strength required to overcome the horrific litany of injuries suffered in that 2009 car accident, might argue that greater forces are at play.

It was in the Washington area, of course, where the crash occurred -- two nights before the national team's World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica and about four miles from RFK Stadium, where Davies was introduced as United's newest player on Wednesday.
