East Carolina Becomes Offensive Power

East Carolina football offenseAs spring practice came to a close, East Carolina offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley wasn't shy about his feelings toward his offense.

For nearly five weeks, Riley and the rest of the offensive staff had been installing the spread system the same staff used at Texas Tech, and thus far the resulting product didn't look anything like the Red Raider teams.

Players were tired. They weren't used to running throughout practice, so as practice wore on, the plays became sloppy.

Players were undisciplined. Riley went through the bulk of spring with half a running back corps because two major components were suspended.

Players didn't believe. East Carolina wasn't known for its offensive prowess and it was trying to work a new system without former three-year starting quarterback Patrick Pinkney and top running back Dominique Lindsay.

But something changed for the Pirates during the offseason and, as this season has trekked on, East Carolina has become one of the most formidable passing offenses in the country. Currently, it leads Conference USA and ranks eighth nationally in passing offense, the first time a C-USA East team has lead the league in passing offense since the divisions were formed before the 2006 season.
