Will Montgomery in a Zone for Redskins

When October began, Will Montgomery would have had the right to feel a little down. Although he had shown enough to Washington's new coaching staff to hold onto his roster spot, the fifth-year guard had been inactive in the Redskins' first three games. The more experienced Artis Hicks and Kory Lichtensteiger, whom coach Mike Shanahan had drafted in Denver, were starting. And holdover Derrick Dockery had started the first two games. Montgomery was an afterthought.

But Montgomery persevered and with his typical, grinding style, he worked his way into a rotation with Hicks at right guard in November. And this month, Montgomery has become the starter at that spot. Sunday at Jacksonville, the 6-foot-3, 310-pound Virginia Tech graduate will do something he has never done before in the NFL: start a fourth straight game.

Shanahan said that Montgomery "did a heck of a job" in last week's game at Dallas. However, the Redskins have lost his string of starts and Montgomery isn't about to ease the work ethic that kept him going as he bounced from Carolina to the New York Jets to Washington from September 2007 to December 2008.
