Troy Smith Officially Gets Week 16 Starting Nod for 49ers

Troy SmithWith their season on the line, the 49ers will turn to Troy Smith as their starting quarterback for their Week 16 game at St. Louis, replacing Alex Smith. San Francisco coach Mike Singletary announced the move Thursday.

The NFL Network's Jason La Canfora had reported earlier in the week that the 49ers were going to reinstate Troy Smith as their starter -- the former Ohio State star made five starts for San Francisco earlier this season, then was replaced by Alex Smith, who opened the year in that spot before injuring his shoulder.

Singletary may have a short leash Sunday, though, as both his job security and the 49ers' NFC West chances may be on the line. The heat's cranked up exponentially on Singletary as the year's gone on -- San Francisco was expected to run away with the Kurt Warner-less NFC West, but opened the year 0-5 and now sits 5-9. A loss Sunday would eliminate the 49ers from playoff contention, even in the league's worst division.
