Americans Abroad: Charlie Davies Dresses for Sochaux

A slew of Americans logged minutes for their respective European clubs this weekend, but the most notable outing came courtesy of a player who never got off the bench.

One year, two months, nine days and one grueling comeback after last dressing for a top-flight match, Charlie Davies returned to the game day roster in France as an unused substitute during Sochaux's lively 1-1 draw with Bordeaux on Sunday.

Davies last played a significant match Oct. 10, 2009, when he started the United States' 3-2 World Cup qualifying win over Honduras that booked the Yanks' ticket to South Africa.

Three days later, he was involved in a fatal car accident near Washington D.C., that left him with three broken bones in his right leg, a torn knee ligament, a fractured elbow, eye socket and nose and a lacerated bladder.

Sochaux returns to action Wednesday at Monaco for its final game before the holiday break. With Nigerian Brown Ideye and Malian Modibo Maiga ahead of him on the Sochaux depth chart, Davies could very well be loaned out during the January transfer window as he continues to climb back to full fitness. Davies previously played with the Sochaux reserves in the French fourth division during his rehabilitation.
