Canada Uses Power Play to Fuel Win Against Russia in World Juniors Opener

Canada World JuniorsBUFFALO, N.Y, -- Ryan Johansen and Brayden Schenn scored power play goals two minutes, 28 seconds apart in the third period to snap a tie and help Canada to a 6-3 win over Russia at the World Junior Hockey Championship on Sunday.

The longtime rivals didn't exactly serve up a classic Canada-Russia matchup in the opening game for both teams at the pressure-packed tournament featuring the top junior-aged players.

In the end, it was Canada's power play that made the difference, scoring three times in front of 18,690 fans at HSBC Arena

Johansen put Canada ahead 4-3 at 3:46 into the third period, just 33 seconds after the Russians found themselves a man short.

Defenseman Ryan Ellis made a smart play to keep the puck in just inside the Russian blueline, and a few bounces later, Johansen chipped the puck past goaltender Igor Bobkov, giving Canada the lead for a third time in the game.
