Jim Joyce, Armando Galarraga Have Uneventful Reunion in Detroit

Filed under: Tigers, MLB UmpiresIt took Jim Joyce a half inning to find his focus Friday night, but once he settled in it was back to business as usual for the veteran umpire. First, though, he had to get through that first inning, staring out from behind home plate at the man he robbed of a perfect game three months ago, Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga.

It was Joyce's first time back at Comerica Park since the day after that June 2 game against the Indians in which Joyce incorrectly ruled Jason Donald safe on what would have been the final out of a 27-up, 27-down game for Galarraga. And now here he was, his umpiring crew's rotation lining up with Galarraga's turn for the Tigers to ensure it would be the most-watched umpire-pitcher combination in recent memory.

"That was probably the second-hardest plate job of my life for the first three outs," Joyce told reporters, ranking it behind the game he called in Detroit the day after his mistake. "After those three outs, though, I felt like I could go back to being Jim Joyce the umpire." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
