Steve Mason Signs Two-Year Contract Extension With Columbus

Filed under:

If the Columbus Blue Jackets are going to rebound from a disappointing and ugly 2009-10 campaign to get back into the postseason, they're going to need their third-year netminder, Steve Mason, to play substantially better than he did a year ago. Coming off a season that saw him rank near the bottom of most goaltending categories, the Blue Jackets seem pretty convinced he can rebound.

How so? On Monday, the team signed him to a two-year contract extension that will run through the end of the 2012-13 season.

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, via Twitter, the deal carries an average annual salary of $2.9 million ($2.6 million in 2011-12 and $3.2 million in 2012-13). That's a pretty nice investment for a goalie that, so far, has had one great season (Calder Trophy, finalist for Vezina Award, league leader in shutouts) and one awful season. Just as a comparison, the Montreal Canadiens signed Carey Price -- who has played one more season in the NHL than Mason and is one year older -- to an annual salary of $2.75 million over the next two years.
