John Fox Rounds Out Staff With Keith Burns, Sam Garnes as Broncos Assistants

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- In a final round of hiring, Denver Broncos coach John Fox on Thursday added Keith Burns as his assistant special teams coach and Sam Garnes as his assistant secondary coach.

The addition of the two, both former NFL players, completed Fox's staff for the upcoming season. Fox, formerly Carolina's coach, was hired Jan. 13 to replace the fired Josh McDaniels.

Burns returns for a fifth season to help coach the Broncos' special teams. A standout special teams player during a 13-year NFL career, Burns also spent 11 seasons with the Broncos playing linebacker.

Garnes joins the Broncos after serving under Fox last season in Carolina where he was a special teams assistant. During a seven-year playing career, Garnes played safety for the New York Giants and New York Jets.

In assembling his coaches, Fox retained eight from the previous Denver staff, including running backs coach Eric Studesville, who served as interim head coach in the final month of the season following McDaniels' firing on Dec. 6. Six followed Fox to Denver from Carolina, which declined to renew Fox's contract for a 10th season there after the Panthers finished an NFL-worst 2-14.
