Washington's Steven Sarkisian: Reggie Bush an 'Idiot' Over Heisman Flap

Filed under: USC, Campus, Coaching, HeismanIn an interview with ESPN, Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian blasted New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush's decision to return the Heisman Trophy, but without any apology for his actions while playing his college days at USC.

"He had a chance to apologize, look like the good guy," Sarkisian (pictured right) told ESPN's Shelley Smith. "But in giving it back and not apologizing, he just looks like an idiot again."

Ironically, Sarkisian was part of the offensive coaching staff at USC when Bush won the Heisman in 2005.

Bush said Thursday that returning the Heisman was "not an admission of guilt," but the best way to end the controversy over the legendary trophy and the controversy that has ensued since Bush won it five years ago.

Bush's decision to return the trophy came after a number of actions against USC, which was hit with numerous sanctions by the NCAA for a plethora of violations, including those against Bush, his family and former Trojans basketball star O.J. Mayo.

Had Bush not returned the trophy, the Heisman Trust, which oversees awarding the trophy, was poised to strip Bush of the award. There is now a movement afoot to award the trophy to Vince Young, who came in second to Bush in the balloting.

"No matter how much money he got paid, that didn't affect how we prepared," Sarkisian told Smith. "We weren't the best team in football because of what he or his parents took."

Bush's return of the trophy marks the first time in the award's 75-year history that such an action has occurred. One of the few guidelines given to Heisman Trophy voters is that a player must be in compliance with NCAA rules to be eligible for the trophy.
