With a bit more than 15 minutes remaining in Wednesday night's CONCACAF Champions League game between the Seattle Sounders and CF Monterrey, it looked as if American soccer's excruciating winless streak in Mexico was on the verge of ending.
A Sounders side composed largely of reserves was ahead, 2-0, against a team that didn't need the game. Seattle was 0-3-0 in Group C, Monterrey 3-0-0. But the weight of history is a funny thing, and it often exerts its influence in soccer.
The young Sounders wilted. The Rayados, urged on by an increasingly enthusiastic crowd at the Estadio Tecnológico, apparently decided the streak wouldn't end on their watch. With 10 minutes left in the match, Monterrey led 3-2. That's how it ended (video here).
