Evan Longoria Likely to Miss Rays' Weekend Series Against Mariners

Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is unlikely to play this weekend due to a strained left quad, and probably will not return until the middle of next week, manager Joe Maddon said Friday.

Longoria suffered the injury while attempting to turn a double play on Thursday in New York. Tampa Bay won that game to pull within a 1/2 game of the first-place Yankees.

The Rays, however, have the luxury of a healthy lead in the AL wild-card race -- their magic number for clinching a playoff berth is four -- and so there is little incentive for them to risk Longoria's long-term health when they have a spot in the postseason all but locked up.
