UCLA Turns Jeers Into Cheers With Resounding Victory Over Houston

Filed under: Houston, UCLA, Conference USA, Pac 10PASADENA, Calif. - The fans actually cheered this time when UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel addressed the 54,407 sitting in the Rose Bowl.

The blaring rap music filled the Bruins' festive locker room. And Neuheisel and his players alike had tangible evidence that their "relentless optimism," as they put it, helped ensure a win.

UCLA's 31-13 victory over No. 23 Houston on Saturday created a much different atmosphere here than when the Bruins suffered an embarrassing 35-point shutout loss to Stanford only a week ago. At that time, most of the fans left early and Neuheisel's customary post-game address to those still in attendance only sparked more boos.

The locker room remained eerily silent. And for the players who bothered sticking around, they pleaded the media shouldn't equate a 0-2 start to an already-lost season. After UCLA (1-2) won its first game over a ranked opponent since beating Tennessee at the Rose Bowl in Neuheisel's debut as the Bruins' coach in 2008, he emphasized to his players they should see this as a new beginning.

"I told them this is the first game of the year," Neuheisel said. "We're 1-0." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
