ACC Report: Wallace Wade Prominent in Histories of Duke and Alabama

Rich history. In fact, Duke head coach David Cutcliffe says it's appropriate that the Crimson Tide will play at snug Wallace Wade Stadium.

"There are just a lot of connections here, and let's just hope that the game lives up to the atmosphere," Cutcliffe said.

Let's explain. One, Wallace Wade brought both Alabama and Duke to college football prominence.

From 1923-30, Wade was 61-13-3 at Alabama and led the Crimson Tide to three Rose Bowls and three national championships (1925, 1926 and 1930).

Wade then served 16 seasons as the head coach at Duke (1931-41, 1946-50), was 110-36-7 and remains the school's winningest coach. The Durham, N.C., stadium was renamed in Wade's honor in 1967.

The game means plenty to Cutcliffe, too. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
