Western Kentucky Sells Recruits on Opportunity Rather Than Victories

Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart is peddling opportunity.

That and a quality education are among the few things the second-year coach can offer recruits because the wins have been few and far between. In fact, since Western Kentucky became a full-fledged member of the FBS and the Sun Belt Conference three years ago, the Hilltoppers have won just four games, including two last season.

But somehow, Taggart (right) has sold opportunity to several recruits and has notched the best class in the Sun Belt Conference for the second consecutive season, according to Rivals.com.

"We wouldn't be talking to them if we didn't need them," Taggart said. "I think the biggest thing for us is that we don't settle just because we haven't had a lot of success on the football field. That's why we're recruiting these guys. We want to compete and if you compete for some of the best guys, you've got to get some of the best. And that's what happens with our program when we get them on campus."
