NASCAR Warns Clint Bowyer's Team Over Technical Inspection

Close is apparently close enough when it comes to NASCAR's technical inspection team. So the sanctioning body, in what is part "courtesy call" and part "wake-up call," is warning the Richard Childress Racing team that its No. 33 Chevrolet driven by Clint Bowyer was dangerously close to failing inspection following the Sept. 11 regular-season finale at Richmond, Va.

NASCAR officials are scheduled to meet with team representatives Tuesday to inform RCR of their concern and they've held the car at their Concord, N.C., Research and Development facility since it was impounded following the race at Richmond International Raceway two weeks ago.

Although the car did pass inspection, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Tuesday, "The body was very close to the tolerances permitted and we want to point out to them how close it is. This is standard procedure.''

Poston said the only reason the car has remained at NASCAR's R&D center is because travel schedules didn't allow for an expedited meeting. Bowyer won Sunday in New Hampshire, the opening round of the 10-race Chase playoff, to vault from 12th in the standings to second.

Bengals vs. Browns Preview, Score and More

Storyline: While the other two division rivals crash in Pittsburgh, the Browns and Bengals will get it on for bragging rights of the state of Ohio. The Bengals (2-1) have not won pretty considering the firepower surrounding quarterback Carson Palmer with pass catchers Chad Ochocinco, Jordan Shipley, Jermaine Gresham and the ageless one, Terrell Owens. As the Bengals continue to find a rhythm offensively and as a team staying afloat, largely due their defense, the Browns (0-3) are consistently playing competitively, only to lose close at the end. Can the Browns feed off their nearly successful performance against the Ravens or will the Bengals manage to keep pace in the division, despite not playing well offensively?

Who: Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Browns

Where: Cleveland Brown Stadium, Cleveland, Ohio

When: Sunday, Oct. 1, 1 p.m. ET

TV Coverage: CBS

Players to Watch:
In any moment, Browns wide receiver Josh Cribbs can have a breakout game for his team. But as a receiver, he needs the ball to get to him. Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme is expected to start after suffering a high ankle sprain in the season-opening game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 12, though he isn't a certainty. If healthy, Delhomme is a crafty veteran who knows how to get the ball to his playmakers. Watch for Browns running back Peyton Hillis to repeat his success in carrying the ball after stream rolling over the Ravens a week ago. After voicing his frustration for wanting more carries, Bengals running back Cedric Benson should ignite the offense on Sunday.

George Karl's Return Speaks Loudly, Even if His Voice Does Not

George KarlDENVER -- Just in case, George Karl showed up with a whistle.

Tuesday marked the first day of practice for the Denver Nuggets coach since he was lost in March for the final 1 1/2 months of last season due to a form of throat cancer. If Karl's voice didn't hold up, an electronic whistle was in his pocket.

Karl said he didn't use the whistle except to joke around with players. His voice, although a bit strained following Monday's media day and team meetings, was good enough to make it through the first day of training camp.

"When you have a bad practice and guys have a lazy mentality, you might use it then,'' Karl said. "But (Tuesday) was very professional and very solid.''

And very uplifting. Nuggets players were thrilled to have their coach back on the court.

"Seeing him energetic, positive, you can tell he's excited about it,'' said forward Carmelo Anthony.

Chargers Fail to Sell Out, Sparking Another San Diego Blackout

Sunday's game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Chargers at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium failed to sell out before Thursday's deadline, resulting in another blackout in the Chargers' local television market.

The league mandates a television blackout within a 75-mile radius of the stadium where the game is being played if it doesn't sell out 72 hours prior to kickoff. San Diego's home opener against Jacksonville also failed to sell out before the deadline, ending a string of 48 consecutive sellouts at the Chargers' home park.

In a statement, the Chargers said more than 6,500 tickets to the game remain unsold.
