When the New York Yankees convene in Tampa for spring training next year, 39-year-old Jorge Posada will reportedly begin the transition to full-time designated hitter. Sliding in behind the plate will be 21-year-old Jesus Montero, whom the team feels is ready to take over every-day catching duties, according to a New York Daily News source.Talk about, "Out with the old, in with the new."
Montero, rated the No. 4 prospect by Baseball America prior to the 2010 season, hit .289 with 21 home runs at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre this season. But the young backstop will still have to prove he's ready to catch at the major-league level - and more importantly, hit.
"He's going to have to prove that," Cashman said on Oct. 25. "He's an exceptionally talented person, but potential means you haven't made it yet. He had a slow start at Triple-A this year, he was the youngest hitter in the International League. He put up some tremendous numbers once he got underway.
