Boston has long coveted the first baseman and will inevitably have a standing trade rumor in place as long as he's still in San Diego. There's a new one on the horizon, just in time for the Winter Meetings, and this incarnation seems a bit more substantive than most, as Hot Stove rumors go.
Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and his San Diego counterpart (and former assistant) Jed Hoyer have been engaged in trade talks about Gonzalez, ESPN.com's Gordon Edes reports. He added that conversations appear to be "making some headway," according to a source.
The deal as currently speculated would consist entirely of prospects heading to the Padres, potentially led by the likes of right-hander Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo and a few other high-end Sox minor leaguers.
