John Whisenant Named New York Liberty's GM, Coach

The New York Liberty of the WNBA announced Tuesday that they've hired former Sacramento Monarchs coach and general manager John Whisenant to fill both slots. The team was expected to formally announce the hiring at a late afternoon press conference.

Whisenant was general manager in Sacramento for seven seasons until the franchise folded after the 2009 season. He coached the Monarchs for all or parts of five seasons, guiding the team to its lone WNBA championship in 2005, the same year he was named league Coach of the Year.
