As it turned out, the awarding of the Vancouver Canucks captaincy was a surprise -- but the choice was not.
First-ever Canucks captain Orland Kurtenbach handed Sedin a jersey with the C on it in a pre-game ceremony Saturday night before they played their 2010-11 season opener against the Los Angeles Kings.
The elder Sedin twin, who won league scoring title and most valuable player honours last season, received a loud ovation from the crowd as the Canucks celebrated the 40th anniversary of the night the franchise entered the NHL, which was also in a game against the Kings.
"It brought back a lot of memories from last year, last game of the regular season, the reaction from the fans," said Sedin after the Canucks lost 2-1 in a shootout. "It was great. It was tough to get up for the game, but (the ovation) was nice -- for sure."
