ESPN, citing anonymous team sources, reported that Boozer suffered the injury after tripping over a bag inside his house.
Boozer was Chicago's high-priced free agent pick-up this summer, having signed a five-year contract worth $75 million. Boozer has a record of injuries, though this fracture seems completely unrelated to previous maladies. Boozer played 78 of 82 games last season, but missed 45 games in 2008-09. Over the course of six seasons in Utah, Boozer played in just over 70 percent of his potential games, a fairly low number.
New Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau does have last season's most common starting frontcourt -- Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson -- available. But Boozer was seen as the potent interior scorer the Bulls have for so long lacked, and a perfect complement to slashing point guard Derrick Rose and mid-range magician Luol Deng. Without Boozer for several weeks, the Bulls offense will rely heavily on Rose's playmaking to put points up.
