Justin Blackmon's Super Season Couldn't Even Be Derailed by Suspension

Justin BlackmonORLANDO, Fla. -- A one-game, midseason suspension may have cost Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon a chance to be a Heisman Trophy finalist, but it certainly didn't slow him down.

It just made him better.

"When something is taken away, that's when you realize how much it means to you,'' Blackmon said. "It's in the past. It's over with. Sure, I regret what happened, but it made me a better person.''

Blackmon is expected to win the Biletnikoff Award Thursday night as the nation's best wide receiver, a distinction he proved from the first game of the season until the last -- except for the one game he missed in the middle.

Blackmon went from being a relatively unknown freshman to becoming the first wide receiver to win the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year award when he led the nation in yards receiving (151.3 avg) and catches per game (9.3) and 18 touchdown receptions.

"I'm actually a little surprised by it all. I had high expectations coming in. I knew I wanted to be a 1,000-yard
receiver and have a 50-catch season, but this just kind of happened,'' he said during the College Football Awards media session Wednesday at Disney. "That's the benefit of a wide-open offense.''

Under new offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, Blackmon teamed with quarterback Brandon Weeden and running back Kendall Hunter to make the Cowboys (10-2) one of the nation's most exciting offensive teams. They will finish the season against Arizona at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.
