Time for Schools to Pay Mouths That Feed Them Megabucks

Ryan LeafShould college football players be paid?

Does Alabama wish it had Boise State's schedule?

Of course it does, and of course they do.

The old debate has new life thanks to the Sports Illustrated expose on agent Josh Luchs. He spent years funneling cash to dozens of players.

Luchs said he gave Ryan Leaf $500 a month in hopes of luring him as a client. That seems remarkable now, since the Chargers paid about 1,000 times that to make Leaf go away.

Kidding aside, did you hear Luchs' justification for being a sleazeball?

"A lot of these kids didn't even have enough money to buy groceries," he said in one of the 592 radio interviews he's done in the past 24 hours to promote the story. "I'm not trying to paint myself as Mother Teresa, but clearly, at least in my case, the money served a purpose."
