Steve Phillips' Twins-Yankees Breakdown

The AL Central champion Minnesota Twins and AL wild card New York Yankees square off beginning Wednesday in an American League Division Series. FanHouse analyst Steve Phillips breaks down both teams heading into the series:

Minnesota Twins (94-68)

Francisco LirianoThe Twins get home-field advantage this time around. In the past that hasn't seemed to matter, but this year it sure feels critical as the Twins have the best home record (53-28) in the AL. The Yankees are only 43-38 on the road, but have had the Twins' number in postseason play in the last several meetings.

The Twins went 17-10 in September, but that hides the fact that they limped into the playoffs. They lost eight of their last 10 games and gave up 67 runs in those eight losses. Their pitching staff is scuffling to say the least. They have a number of key players who have injuries that literally has them limping as well. Joe Mauer has a sore knee as does J.J. Hardy. Jim Thome has had a sore back he has been dealing with, and rookie lefty Brian Duensing has had a sore shoulder. Other than that everything is great, even with Justin Morneau out for the duration of the postseason.

Starting Rotation

The Twins' starters have been the main culprits in their recent struggles.
