For most players, a national team call-up is a reward, an acknowledgment that everything is going well at the club level and that they are ready to step up and represent their country.
Not so for a few members of the American player pool, particularly Jozy Altidore and Oguchi Onyewu. For them, the U.S. national team is a refuge, a place they can go and be assured they'll be considered for playing time. This season has been particularly difficult for the pair, and each made the most of his international respite on Saturday night.
Altidore scored in the first half and Onyewu in the second as the U.S. tied Poland, 2-2, in Chicago. Each had his ups and downs during the course of an eventful game, but the goals surely will provide a welcome boost of confidence to players who sorely need it. They also may grab the attention of their coaches back in Europe. Or, if not, perhaps a club that may be willing to acquire them and actually put them on the field.
