Anthony Smith Traded Back to Packers

In March of 2009, the Green Bay Packers signed safety Anthony Smith to a free-agent contract, only to decide he wasn't good enough for the 53-man roster. They released him in September.

But a year later, the Packers are much more desperate for help in the secondary, and so they've brought Smith back, acquiring him on Sunday night in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The terms of the trade, which was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, have not yet been reported, although it's likely that the Jaguars will get a conditional 2011 draft pick from Green Bay.

Smith is far from a star, but he was a starter in Jacksonville -- he was actually ready to start for the Jaguars on Monday night -- and for the Packers, adding a starter to the secondary is a big improvement. The Packers have been woefully thin in the secondary all season, and it became a particularly big problem when safety Morgan Burnett suffered a torn ACL. Adding Smith will make a difference.
