Mike Fisher Traded to Nashville

Ever since he married country music singer Carrie Underwood, there's been talk, whether it was serious or not, that Mike Fisher's NHL home could one day be in the music city with the Nashville Predators. On Thursday, it became all a reality when the former Ottawa Senators center was traded to the Predators for a 2011 first-round draft pick and a conditional 2012 draft pick.

The conditional pick, as announced by the Predators in a statement, is their third-round selection in 2012 if the team wins one round in this year's postseason. It will become a second-rounder if the team wins two or more rounds. This is where we have to point out that in the first 11 of years of their existence the Predators have yet to advance beyond the first round of the postseason, going out in the opening round in each of their five playoff appearances.

It's the first of what could be a number of moves for a reeling Senators club that is stuck in a free-fall mode, having lost 11 games in a row and 17 of their past 18. As of Thursday morning they are just one point ahead of the New York Islanders for the worst mark in the Eastern Conference, and only two points ahead of the Edmonton Oilers for the worst mark in the entire league.

Fisher, 30, is signed through the 2012-13 season with a contract that pays him $4.2 million per season. In 55 games this season he's scored 14 goals to go with 11 assists, and has scored at least 20 goals in five of the past six seasons. Offense, however, is just a small part of his game as he's also a tough defensive player and strong penalty killer. In other words: he should be a good fit within Nashville's system, which is essentially what general manager David Poile said about the move in the teams press release.
