Hue Jackson Endorses Jason Campbell as Raiders' No. 1 Quarterback

New Raiders coach Hue Jackson gave his unabashed support to Jason Campbell as his No. 1 quarterback heading into next season.

Jackson's strong support has to be encouraging for Campbell, who was benched three different times last season in favor of Bruce Gradkowski by fired coach Tom Cable.

Campbell, acquired before last season in a trade with Washington, finished up the year as the starter after Gradkowski went on injured reserve with a separated shoulder.

"There's no question he is," Jackson said when asked if Campbell was his No. 1 quarterback in 2011 during an interview Monday with a Fresno radio station.

"The guy won some very important games," Jackson told station KMJ 580-AM . "The guy played hurt. The guy got to know his teammates, rallied his team, and finished very strong.

"He helped us win, obviously, every game in our division, there's no question he is definitely the unquestioned starter on this football team at this point. But I think he knows without any shadow of a doubt, there's work to do, and we have to do a great job of surrounding him, putting better players around him so he can go out and be the quarterback that we all know he can be."

Campbell figured prominently in the Raiders' 8-8 finish, including a 6-0 mark against AFC West teams.

Jackson also spoke out in defense of Al Davis. He rejected the perception that the Raiders owner was out of touch and overly meddlesome and laughed off concerns he could wind up being the target of a harsh critique from the owner, who has lambasted former Raiders coaches Cable and Lane Kiffin.
