Andy Pettitte Announces Retirement, Says Return 'Just Didn't Feel Right'

Andy PettitteAndy Pettitte officially announced his retirement Friday at Yankee Stadium.

The 38-year-old left-hander said he had mixed feelings about leaving the game and thought even within the last couple of weeks that he might play again in 2011, but ultimately decided he wasn't fully committed to a return.

"It just didn't feel right for me anymore,'' Pettitte said. "I didn't have the hunger, the drive I felt like I needed.''

Though Pettitte said he was pretty certain at the end of last season, when the Rangers eliminated the Yankees from the playoffs, that his career was finished, he did reconsider. When Cliff Lee signed with the Phillies instead of the Yankees, Pettitte said, he felt an obligation to help his two-time employer and began working out again.
