Three's a Crowd in Maple Leaf Net

Filed under:

Toronto Maple LeafsThere is a crowd in the Toronto Maple Leafs' net and the odd-man out will undoubtedly be rookie Jeff Reimer, who is the first Leaf goalie to register three straight wins, home or away, in almost two years.

Reimer went into Thursday's game in Phoenix hoping to become the first Maple Leafs rookie to win four consecutive games, all on the road. The others are Mike Palmateer (1976-77), Peter Ing (1990-91) and Damian Rhodes (1993-94).

But Reimer had better enjoy the ride while he can because his time traveling by charter jet with the Leafs rather than taking a bus with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League will soon be up.

The Leafs have far too much invested in their two other goalies, JS Giguere and Jonas Gustavsson, to keep three netminders around.

Giguere was penciled in to be Reimer's back-up in Phoenix. Giguere, the 13-year veteran who is coming off a groin injury, needs to get his game back on track.
