Texans Retain Gary Kubiak, Fire Four Coaches from Defensive Staff

As expected, Houston Texans' Head Coach Gary Kubiak's job turned out to be safe.

However, the defensive staff wasn't as fortunate.

On the same day learned officially he had been retained for a sixth season, Kubiak on Monday officially announced that he had released much of the defensive staff: defensive coordinator Frank Bush, secondary coach David Gibbs, linebackers' coach Johnny Holland and assistant linebackers' coach Robert Saleh. The Texans finished 30th in total defense this season, 32nd against the pass.

"Our defensive side of the ball was not good," Kubiak said late Monday afternoon. "We have some serious problems we have to address. We have issues across the board to address. I had to make some decision of how to get better."

There had been widespread speculation in recent weeks that Kubiak would be fired in the wake of the Texans' season-ending slide from first place in the AFC South after six weeks to a ninth consecutive season out of the playoffs.
