Chargers Fire Special Teams Coach Steve Crosby

The problems with special teams that plagued the San Diego Chargers throughout the season on Monday cost Steve Crosby his job.

Crosby was let go by the Chargers after Head Coach Norv Turner decided against renewing his contract. Crosby had been with the Chargers for the last nine years.

"We appreciate Steve's hard work and dedication to this team over the last nine seasons," Turner said in a statement.

There was no immediate word on a replacement.

At the midway point of the season, with the Chargers struggling amid a slew of blocked punts and blown kickoff coverages, Turner passionately defended the work of Crosby after being asked whether Crosby's job was in danger. At the time, Turner said it was wrong to blame the coach when missed assignments on the field were the cause of the problems.
