D.C. United announces 2011 club awards
D.C. United announced today the club?s end-of-season award winners, with several honors going to 2011 Budweiser Golden Boot winner and MLS MVP candidate Dwayne De Rosario. The Canadian playmaker tops the list by earning 2011 Volkswagen Most Valuable Player Award, Volkswagen Fans' Choice Award, Volkswagen Goal of the Year and the club?s Golden Boot. After an impressive debut MLS season in which he led the team in minutes played, Perry Kitchen wins the club?s 2011 Visa Defender of the Year Award.

Olsen confirmation lends stability to DC's busy offseason
WASHINGTON ? While there is plenty of work ahead in D.C. United?s offseason, there?s at least one hole the team doesn?t have to fill ? the head coach position.
?This time last year was very difficult and you can?t do a lot of planning,? General Manager Dave Kasper said of last year?s coaching search. ?Now we can get right after it ? we know what we have here and know what we need to try and accomplish next year. That?s a huge plus for us.?

DC United's De Rosario in the hunt for triple crown
To say D.C. United?s Dwayne De Rosario has had a big year would is like saying the Arctic gets chilly in the winter.
The 33-year-old perennial All Star recorded 16 goals and 12 assists this season, good enough to claim the MLS Golden Boot award as top scorer. Despite his illustrious career, this year marks the first time he has earned the award.
And he did it while spending time at three different clubs in 2011.

DC reflect on up-and-down season after loss to KC
WASHINGTON ? In many ways, it was a game that summed up a season for D.C. United.
The lone goal in Sporting Kansas City?s 1-0 win came off a set piece, an Achilles heel for DC for much of the year. And though they were able to create a few clear chances on Sporting?s net, United lacked the killer instinct in front of goal to tuck them away.

D.C. United Youth Academy continues 2011-2012 season preparations
D.C. United?s Youth Academy continued its preparation for the 2011-2012 season this weekend as the U-16 and U-18 sides faced Albertson on Sunday, October 23 at the RFK training grounds.
The U-18?s played their third pre-season match on Sunday afternoon, consisting of three 30-minute periods. Albertson scored two goals in a physical and fast-paced first period, securing a final score of 2-0. Despite improved play throughout the match, United was unable to tally a goal. The U-18?s previously fell 3-1 against Toronto FC on October 17.

United still find plenty left to play for against Sporting
WASHINGTON ? Despite being troubled by an injured shin in Wednesday night?s 1-1 draw against Portland Timbers, midfielder Dwayne De Rosario fully expects to take part in D.C. United?s season finale Saturday night against Sporting KC (7:30 PM ET, CSN+).
?It?s our last game, it?s fan appreciation night, last game of the season, still a lot to play for in terms of pride,? De Rosario told reporters. ?Hopefully we can finish the season on a positive note.?

United disappointed but not defeated
Mornings in the lower levels of RFK Stadium are eerily quiet these days. At the time when the team usually reports for training, there are no sounds of players shuffling in the hallways from the weight room to the training tables. Instead there is only a calm silence in the wake of a turbulent two weeks that saw United fall at the final late season hurdle. For the fourth consecutive year there will not be a postseason for the Black-and-Red, yet strangely there is a distinct sense of optimism surrounding 2400 East Capitol Street.

United fight to the end
WASHINGTON ? With a loss or tie meaning the end of D.C. United?s playoff hopes, Wednesday?s match against Portland was always going to be a brutal fight to the end.
And that?s exactly what it was: D.C. throwing caution to the wind tied at 1-1, and creating a host of chances in the final ten minutes of the game. But the game-winning goal proved elusive and the draw spelled the end of postseason hopes ? though it came with the fight and effort the coaching staff was hoping to see.

Recap: D.C. United 0 - Sporting KC 1
WASHINGTON ? Sporting Kansas City needed a win on Saturday night against D.C. United to clinch first place in the Eastern Conference, and defender Matt Besler?s delivered, firing home the winner in the 54th-minute to earn SKC a 1-0 win on the road to close out the regular season.
Kansas City created the game?s first chance in the 4th minute when Kei Kamara curled in a teasing cross from the right wing to Omar Bravo in the six-yard box. The Mexican international?s touch betrayed him, however, and his bouncing volley went out for a goal kick.

Starting XI: Top 11 questions heading into MLS weekend
1. How will the ?also-rans? conclude their campaigns?
Six of this weekend?s contests pit playoff sides against non-qualifiers, the sort of matchups that can play out in a number of directions. While it might seem obvious that the Cup-chasing sides would have far more motivation to perform at their best, those who miss out on the playoff party face a long, long offseason and many prefer to have a satisfying final performance linger in the mind.
2. How now, New York?

Match Play Presents Early Intrigue, Often Unfulfilling Final Rounds
Filed under: PGA
This week's WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz., could be something really special.
Or it might not.
That's the tricky thing about match play. When competition begins Wednesday with 64 of the top ranked players in the world, there will be all sorts of intriguing possibilities. A few times over the years, promise has even delivered. In 2000, Darren Clarke beat Tiger Woods in the final. Woods won in 2003 by taking down David Toms in the final and won again in 2004 over Davis Love III. Woods defeated Stewart Cink in 2008. Even last year, although an all-England final, Ian Poulter's victory over Paul Casey had its viewing strengths.
But then there was 2001 when Steve Stricker beat Pierre Fulke in the Sunday final. Or 2007 when Henrik Stenson beat Geoff Ogilvy. And who doesn't remember Kevin Sutherland's 1-up decision over Scott McCarron in 2002?
Because players are eliminated as the week wears on, it is always possible that by the time Sunday's final match arrives, there is the possibility of a "Who's He?" taking on "Who Cares?"
That makes match play events fascinating in that much of the intrigue often occurs early in the week, and the final days can drag.
